Classes meet at IWCC in Council Bluffs and combine classroom instruction and hands-on practical experience.

About the Program

Join the clean energy workforce! New job opportunities are very likely in the future. 

The program will provide you with an overview of the solar energy industry. You will achieve a basic knowledge and fundamentals of solar applications. Learn the application, design, and installation of solar heating and solar PV in a hands-on lab!

Program to Include

  • Intro to Solar Energy
    You will study development, construction and operation of solar panels with emphasis on operation and maintenance. You will examine both photovoltaic and thermal panels in detail and develop a familiarity with standard procedures.
  • Advance Solar Energy: Photovoltaic
    You will complete an advanced solar photovoltaic (PV, electric) coursework and a hands on lab in which you will learn the application, design, and installation of Solar Photovoltaic.
  • Advance Solar Energy: Thermal
    You will complete an advanced solar heating (thermal) coursework and a hands on lab in which you will learn the application, design, and installation of Solar Heating.

Non-Credit to Credit

Take your education to a whole new level and earn college credit toward a degree in Sustainable Energy Technology.

Career & Salary Information

You usually will start entry level with most companies and entry level solar is manual labor installations. Median wage for Solar Photovoltaic Installers is $14.30/hr. Source EMSI.

Solar Assembler/Basic Installers assemble and mount photovoltaic systems on roofs or other structures in compliance with system design schematics. Roofer with Solar Expertise uses best practices in roofing to install racking systems, mount photovoltaic panels or thermal collectors; and waterproof the flashing around installed components. Solar PV Installers are the solid core of the solar industry: They set up and maintain the sophisticated equipment and wiring that connects a solar energy system to the electrical grid.
